What is an Endemic Species?

  • When a species is endemic to a certain area, it means that the species is unique to that area, and is not found anywhere else in the world... or even the universe.

Importance of Endemic Species

  • Endemic species portray the success and quality of many areas around the world.  Costa Rica boasts an abundance of endemic species, capturing the nature of the environment.  When an area has endemic species, it shows how diverse and sustainable the environment really is.  Costa Rica consists of twelve different climate zones, created by the vast surrounding oceans (Carribean and Pacific) and the mountain range in central Costa Rica.

  • This diverse area, with the tropical climate from the relativly close position to the equator is a popular habitat for species.  Throughout each generation, many species choose to stay in Costa RIca, as it holds all the required and necessary needs of many animals, plants, and birds.

Examples of Endemic Species in the World

The Lemur is endemic to Madagascar, since it only exists on that one particular island.

The Koala is endemic to Australia, becuase it only exists in that area of the world.
