Day 9

Day 9: Tino: Cultural Ambassador; Puerto Viejo Area  -  Thursday, April 30

Tino is a wonderful institution in the colorful Caribbean town of Manzanillo who loves to share stories and his vast knowledge of his rainforest “back yard” with unmatched humor and enthusiasm

Today we take a trip to the town at the end of the road, Manzanillo, a small town that hugs the crystalline water and is touched by Primary Rainforest.  Here we have the opportunity to meet Tino and hike with him in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.  Along the way, we travel from the beach path into the jungle, where the diversity of flora and fauna is beautiful and abundant.  Tino will explain the medicinal, culinary and other uses of many of the trees, fruits and plants along the way.  In the afternoon we swim at one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica.  Punta Uva is a magical spot where the forest meets the sea and monkeys are often spotted eating sea grapes on the point.  Afterwards, we drive back to San Jose for our farewell dinner.

Important Themes:

-       History of Costa Rican Caribbean Culture and its influences

-       Cultural differences throughout Costa Rica

-       Medicinal and practical uses of rainforest plants

Overnight: Casa Conde

Reflection of the Day

On our last full day at Costa Rice we were able to experience the carribean.  We started the day off exploring a local backyard/garden, and many plants that could be grown in the carribean.  We ate/drank coconuts, starfruit, and even lemongrass.  We hiked through the dense forests, and I even had a spider trud on my face.  After the hike, we got to tip our feet into the warm waters of the carribean and watch the beauty of the waves crashing against the shore.  It was a beautiful day

         Reflection of the Trip

The trip to Costa Rica couldn't have been better.  My favorite part was probably the zipling and tarzan swing, becuase even though I am extremely afraid of heights, the view and the security of my classmates made me comfortable and made the experience one to remember.  When I go back to Costa Rica, one of the things I might change is a little more time to relax.  In Costa Rica, we woke up early, went to be late, and filled the day with as many adventures as possible.  Although it was a great strategy for this trip because we got to see so many things, maybe next time I can have a little more time to relax, reflect, and enjoy the spectacular area I am in.  All in all it was one of the most enjoyable 'vacations' I've ever been on.
