Purple Orchid - Guaria morada

Physical Features

The Purple Orchid is a dazzling orchid sprouting in the depths of Costa Rica. The plant is a type of epiphyte, developing on trees instead of rocks. It has a narror base that ranges from 10-12 inches (25-30cm). From the base, beautiful light purple flowers sprout and emit joy to its surroundings. Whether that is near the Costa Rican people, or in the heart of the rainforest.

Its flowers bloom from in late January to Febuary, lasting 1-4 weeks, producing 3-5 large, wide pedals.

The plant often grow from 1,500 to 3,000 feet.

Importance to the Community

The Purple Orchid is a unique flower and impacts almost all of the Costa Rican people.

On June 5th, 1939, Mr. León Cortés Castro declared this orchid as the national flower of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica needed a national flower, so the government asked organizations to hold a competition and the winner was the Guaria Morada.

The Purple Orchid appears in many Costa Rican folklore and legend.

Because the flowers bloom in months close to March and April, the flowers of the Purple Orchid are commonly used in Holy Week Celebrations.

The Purple Orchid is also believed to bring good luck and fortune
