Cocos Island Cuckoo - Coccyzus ferrugineus

The Cocos Island Cuckoo has the bold appearance with a slaty-grey crown, golden-brown underparts, amber colored wings, and a bright yellow ring encircling its eye. The alluring bird grows to around 33 centimeters or 13 inches and weighs around 70 grams.

Habitat & Diet

The Cocos Island Cuckoo lives/is endemic to a small island off the coast of Costa Rica. The Cuckoo inhabits the area of Cocos Island, a natural park, and home to a couple other endemic Costa Rican species.

The Cuckoo hops, runs, and forages in dense vegitation, enjoys the presence of a tropical lowland evergreen forests, hibiscus thickets, and long vines suspended along streams.

The population of only 1,500 Cuckoo's left, feeds on large insects including caterpillars and cicadas, and also lizards

Behavior

The Cuckoo's call is a deep and dry kcha that is repeated 5-8 times, sometimes followed by rolling rattles.

Although there are no published records of the Cocos Cuckoo nesting/mating, their population remains steady in their 47 km² habitat. Even with the introduction of new herbavors degrading their forest habitat, their population seems to tolerate the new species, as their population continues to remain steady.

They don't tend to migrate and/or move from region to region on Cocos Island, they remain in their small habitat for the majority of their lives.
